First United  Church, White Rock - Seasons of the Soul

“Seasons of the Soul” Retreat Series: with Rev. Joan McMurtry.   Begins - Saturday March 27th, 2010
Come, be part of creating a community of mutual respect and caring that welcomes the soul and honors diversity. Renew heart, mind, and spirit by exploring the inner landscape of life. In large group, small-group and solitary settings we will share our inner journeys via personal story-telling, poetry and teachings from through the ages.
The series involves four different events: Saturday: 9AM to 2 PM and another evening: 7-9PM, four times a year. Winter, spring, summer and fall.
Total cost $120 which includes lunch and all materials.
One "Season" -  $30.

You are welcome to join the group at any time.
 Contact Joan McMurtry directly if you are interested.    604-531-4850   revjoan@telus.net.

Winter:  Saturday, March 27   9AM to 2 PM, Tuesday March 30 7PM to 9PM
Spring: Friday, May 14 9AM to 2 PM,
Summer:  Saturday August 14,  Tuesday August 17
Fall:  November 20, Tuesday November 23

During that time we:
·         Offer people a meaningful break from the demands of daily life, an opportunity to slow down and take a journey of regeneration
·         Focus on deep listening in community, to ourselves, to each other and to that of God in every person.
·         Create a soul-safe space for personal and communal discernment about questions of meaning and purpose, calling and ministry, a space that supports both solitude and community.
·         Explore principles and practices that help sustain spiritual and vocational vitality in individuals and congregations.
·         Model a trustworthy form of “life together” that supports the inner journey, strengthens us for work in the world, and can be taken home to help renew family, workplace, and community life.

What is Retreat?  from A Hidden Wholenes, Parker Palmer

We know how to create spaces that invite the spaces that invete the intellect to show up,
analysing reality, parsing logic and arguing its case:
such spaces can be found, for example, in universities.

We know how to create spaces that invite the emotions into play,
reacting to injury, expressing anger and celebrating joy;
they can be found in therapy groups.

We know how to create spaces that invite the will to emerge,
consolidating energy and effort on gehal of a shared goal;
they can be found in task forces and committees.

We certainly know how to invite the ego to put in an appearance,
polishing its image, protecting its turf and demanding its rights:
they can be found wherever we go!

But we know very little about creating spaces
that invite the soul tomake itself known.
Apart from the natural world, such spaces are hard to find
... and we seem to place little value on preserving the soul spaces in nature.
