First United White Rock - Godly Play 

Godly Play teaches children the art of using religious language - parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action - helping them become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives.

First United Church has offered "Godly Play" for the past three years.  We have an excellent trained teacher who is with the children each Sunday along with other helpers.  The class is usually less than 12 children and so there is opportunity for good individual attention.

The children learn a bible story each week.  They begin with a greeting, lighting of a cancle and prayer.  then the story is told using imaginative characters and other props ... such as a really cool sand box desert and beautifully painted pictures.  During the story the children are encouraged to respond to straight forward questions and to bring their own thoughts and imaginations to the story.  After the story there is a time to respond to the story with art or play.  The gathering ends by the children gathering in a circle for a "feast" - a piece of fruit, cracker and some juice - as in the tradition of jesus gathering with his disciples in a circle.  Each child is given a blessing as they leave.

The program works best with 3 to 12 year olds.
